The Best Winter Travel Gear for Cold Weather Vacations
Cold winters can really take a toll on you. And one of the best ways to mix things up is to travel, even if it’s somewhere experiencing similar winter weather. I used to travel quite a bit…and then I had kids. I went on 12 trips and 30+ flights in 2016. And then I had kids. But I learned a thing or two about what to pack and what to keep in my carry-on. After traveling to Denmark in late November, I learned that I could not, in fact, travel without warm boots. Do you have a winter trip planned and are not sure what to pack? Read on for my winter travel essentials that will keep you warm and cozy while traveling during winter. I’ll share some of the best winter vacations I’ve taken, too,
The Best Winter Travel Gear for Cold Weather Vacations
Whether you’re cross-country skiing or just someone who likes lounging at ski resorts, or you’re in search of the northern lights, winter is the perfect time for travel. It’s a way to beat the winter blues, and it’s always nice to mix things up this time of year. Summer vacations can be so busy, so you’ll encounter fewer crowds and can partake in winter activities like ice skating and skiing. Copenhagen’s holiday markets were truly magical, but it was freezing, and there’s a lot do do outside, even in the colder months. And there’s nothing like Christmas time in New York City.
Some of my favorite cold-weather getaways
Winter getaways can be so fun. If you’re looking for winter vacation ideas, consider Copenhagen – it’s the most perfect place and was especially magical during the holiday season. There are tons of cold-weather activities that I was actually into, like drinking mulled wine by the fire and Christmas markets. We has the best time and while I’d love to go back in the spring at some point, I loved our winter visit. Another European favorite? Reykjavik, Iceland. The terrain was almost surreal, and the hot springs are incredible. Winter is a great time to visit, and to see the northern lights, too.
If you’re looking to stay within the United states, consider Whitefish, Montana. It’s perfect for outdoor enthusiasts which I am not, but I loved it – I loved all the outdoor activities and winter sports. Growing up, I went to Yosemite almost every summer, so I always love visiting national parks. I went skiing and snowmobiling – it was so beautiful. I spent some time in Park City, too – it’s a great place to visit.
I’d love to visit Montreal during the winter. The sub-zero temperatures sound a little intense, but it looks magical. The historic downtown looks beautiful. I’d love to plan an Alaska trip at some point, too.
Here are the travel essentials you’ll want to bring on your flight
These are the ones that will get you through the airport and a long (or short) flight. I always bring a tote and carry on. Weekenders are great because you can just set them on your spinner (luggage) and it’s large enough to hold your laptop all your travel essentials.
It’s always a great idea to have a good book or some podcasts to listen to, and depending on the trip, and iPad or laptop. Don’t forget your airpods and to download your favorite music and a movie or two. If you have spotify, don’t forget to download your playlist to offline mode so you’ll be able to play it on the flight. Download a new show or a classic–I keep Something’s Gotta Give and some other go-to favorites on my iPad so I have them if and when I need them.
Next up, beauty products
I never get on a plane without making sure my toothbrush and toothpaste or in my carry on. Do I brush my teeth on every flight? No, but I like a post-flight refresh. If you’re going to be on a plane for 8+ hours, it’s nice to brush before or right after you land. I also carry concealer, hand lotion, lip balm, a hydrating spray or oil, and a rollerball to freshen up before getting off the flight. I’m including my usuals with the addition of some of my most hydrating items for those cold, dry, winter months.

And finally, the clothes
Maybe it’s just me, but my flights are either too hot or too cold, so I usually wear an oversized sweater and a t shirt underneath. If you’re going to wear denim, go with Gap or Pistola since they’re the most comfortable. But I always go for ultra-comfortable, and wear my favorite leggings or joggers. An oversized scarf will serve as a mini blanket or head rest and I bring a fresh pair of socks and an eye mask, too. As far as shoes go, I’ll wear tennis shoes or a comfortable pair of loafers.
