As a liberal, I am having a very hard time thinking about what this country stands for right now, especially when so many people’s rights and freedoms are being debated or taken away. It doesn’t feel like a time to celebrate, but this is a special time of year for our family. My girls’ birthdays are right before and after the 4th, and they look forward to the fireworks all year. The day gives us a chance to really embrace summer — to grill, be with friends, and watch fireworks light up the sky. While I may not feel entirely patriotic these days, I am not about to take away a day of fun from my family.
