How to Find Your Personal Style After Becoming a Mom
!
Are you one of those people who has a closet full of clothes but you never know what to wear? Even if you have a good hold on your own sense of style, life happens. Most recently, I’ve had to figure out my new personal style after having my third baby. I really needed a refresh on my current wardrobe – on the pieces that are easy to wear different ways. Whether I’m working from home, with my kids, running to the grocery store, or meeting a friend for lunch, at the end of the day, I want to feel good about what I’m wearing, and be comfortable. And that’s where Varley comes in – the brand has been my go-to for over a year now. This is sponsored by Varley, brand I have been wearing for over a year now.
How to Find Your Personal Style After Becoming a Mom
I am obviously not a personal stylist, but at 40, I thought I had things figured out. Even though I had a pretty good sense of on my own personal style before I had kids, I found myself needing pieces that functioned for me right now. I know I love neutral colors, timeless pieces, and that I have a pretty minimalist style. My closet felt like a collection. I played around with a few things in my twenties. There were sequins and bright colors, but I found my way back to my classic, neutral pieces.
Finding my personal style after having my third baby at 40
When I got pregnant with my third and found myself with a different body, and back in the baby stage. I discovered Varley during that pregnancy – The Milton Sweat was my go-to. It’s oversized and has zippers on the side, so it was perfect for my growing bump. I have 3 of them and still wear them all the time. Then I bought a few more pieces to wear last spring after having Jack and then a few more for fall and winter. My Varley pieces have been signature pieces in my life this year.
My body shape didn’t really change, but after my third, it took 8 months before my jeans fit again. So I can wear them, but I don’t want to wear jeans if I’m home or running errands. If you work from home or have kids, or are a human being that appreciates comfortable as much as I do, finding comfortable pieces you feel great in at the end of the day matters to you, too. And those pieces, for me, have been from Varley.
These are the kind of clothes I want to wear every day. I love that I can mix the pieces together for different looks and wear them on a daily basis because they’re stylish, comfortable, and made for every shape and body type. Varley has some of the best knitwear, everyday staples, and activewear that you’ll feel good in. I love the brand because the pieces look and feel elevated, and they’re so comfortable. And the most important thing – I feel good in them.
In the event that this is helpful, I am 5’5″, a size 27, and all my Varley pieces are a small except for this jacket, which I have in an XS.
The Best Ways to Find Your Personal Style
Start with Pinterest and IG
I’m going to go old school here, but the first step to figuring out your unique style is starting with a Pinterest board. That mood board is a great way to figure out your signature style or personal brand. I know I love neutral tones and that I’m not big on the latest trends. I always pin really simple outfits – jeans, ballet flats or loafers, and a great sweater and button down, so those are the pieces in my capsule wardrobe. But I don’t want to wear jeans every day because again, I like cozy. Follow your style icons. That fashion editor you love that shares what they wear everyday might give you some ideas.
Take an audit of your closet
The next step is going through your closet and auditing everything. If you haven’t worn it in years or don’t love it, you don’t have to get rid of it right away. But put the things you’re uncertain of to the side, and see if you find yourself wanting to wear them over the next season. If not, ask yourself why you’re holding on to it.
Do some shopping
And the final step? Fill in the gaps with new things that you’re excited about. Sure, you can step outside of your comfort zone, but that’s not something I love to do. I tend to stick with what I love. An intentional wardrobe is one that will last. The big gap for me this year was finding elevated, comfortable pieces I can wear day-to-day. And those are the pieces that have made up my go-to outfits. Here are some of my favorites.

Marcie Knit
I just love that this outfit takes me from going out working at my desk. The Cavendish knit feels like a blanket – it’s so soft, but so chic. And this jacket is reversible, so you get 2 looks and 2 functions since the quilted side is great for drizzly days.
