gym bag essentials

For many of us, the new year feels like a chance to take better care of ourselves. And that often means caring for our mental and physical health. I put a lot of time and energy into my mental health, and into looking at my hormones and labs, getting those under control over the last year and a half. But I recently started strength training classes, and am now incorporating that into my daily routine. How we show up – both mentally and physically – can influence the quality of our workout. A well-packed gym bag can really impact the way that we show up, and how prepared we feel during our workout, and beyond. Showing up prepared for gym workouts and whatever you’re doing after feels good – it makes this commitment to ourselves a little easier. Having the right gear on hand, from hydration essentials to post-workout recovery tools, can help elevate your experience and ensure you’re ready for anything. Whether you’re hitting the weights, a workout class, or walking on the treadmill, these gym bag essentials will keep you prepared, comfortable, and motivated to reach your fitness goals.

Gym Bag Essentials: What to Pack in Your Gym Bag

Whether you’re a seasoned gym-goer or just starting out, having the right gear in your gym bag makes such a difference. It’s not just about the clothes you wear or the equipment you use. It’s about having everything you need to stay comfortable, motivated, and efficient while getting in your best workout. I can’t work out without a reusable water bottle or lip balm, and wouldn’t want to go anywhere afterward without some dry shampoo. In this post, I’ll walk you through the gym bag essentials that anyone, no matter their fitness level, should have on hand. From sports bras and hair ties to the best clean deodorant and gym shoes, the following items are the things you need to get you through your workout and beyond.

I don’t actually go to the gym, but I do go to a fitness class and went to a CrossFit gym 5 days a week for years. Since I work from home, I typically go back home after my workouts. But as someone who has a history of regular workouts, I thought it might be helpful if I shared the things I wear and use when I work out. Arguably the most important item in any gym bag is your workout clothing and a change of clothes if needed. The right gym clothes can significantly impact your comfort, performance, and confidence.

Leak Resistant Water Bottle

Hydration is key to performance, whether you’re lifting, cycling, or doing yoga. A reusable water bottle should be one of your first gym bag essentials. The right water bottle is easy to carry and won't leak, and this one is both of those things. Drinking water before, during, and after your workout helps maintain energy levels and prevents dehydration, which can lead to fatigue and cramping.

Electrolytes

These are a great way to stay hydrated. I love the watermelon salt most, although I tend to just use half a packet for one 30 oz water bottle since an entire packet states too strong for me.

Deodorant

A reliable deodorant is an absolute must-have when it comes to personal care items for your gym bag. It's nice to be able to reapply before a workout, and if you're going to shower after your workout, you'll want coverage for whatever you're doing once you leave.

Hair Ties

There are few things more annoying than walking into the gym or a workout class without a hair tie. I always keep a few extras in my bag and in my car, too. These ties are the best option since they're a little wider and softer than most, so they're a lot less damaging. You never know when you might need to pull your hair up, but it's a certainty during a workout.
