80s pop culture was something, wasn’t it? The 1980s gave us the Sony Walkman, Care Bears, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and of course, me. It was a golden era for family-friendly entertainment, and I was so excited to put this list together. As a child of the 80s (born in 1982) there were some gems to watch while I was growing up – they really don’t make them like they used to. But as it turns out, most of my favorites were actually 90s movies. There are some classics from the 80s that are still treasured by audiences of all ages. I put together a list of classic movies from cartoons to cult classics loved by older kids. Here are the best 80s movies for kids that the whole family will love.

I ranked them in age-friendly order, starting with little kids, and added a few gems for older kids too. The Little Mermaid (1989)

As a mom of two little girls, this is one of our favorite family films. Disney’s animated classic “The Little Mermaid” is a great film about a mermaid and her guppy best friend. The film tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of living on land and finding true love in the form of a human Prince Eric. Filled with memorable characters, catchy songs, and beautiful animation, “The Little Mermaid” is one of those great movies that will always be loved by children and families. 

 

An American Tail (1986)

“An American Tail” is a heartwarming animated film about the adorable Fievel Mousekewitz, a young Russian mouse who immigrates to America with his family in search of a better life. Fievel learns lessons about courage and the importance of family on his journey. 

 

Oliver & Company (1988)

“Oliver & Company” is a charming animated film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set in New York City, the movie puts a modern spin on Charles Dickens’ classic tale “Oliver Twist.” The story follows a young orphaned kitten named Oliver as he navigates the streets of Manhattan and encounters a group of streetwise dogs led by Dodger. Oliver is soon taken in by a young girl named Jenny. Filled with catchy musical numbers (I can still hear the song –  “why should I worry. Why should I ca-a-a-are.)  “Oliver & Company” captures the spirit of friendship, loyalty, and finding your place in the world. 

 

The Land Before Time (1988)

“The Land Before Time” is a beloved animated film released in 1988 and produced by the amazing Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Set in a prehistoric world, this cartoon follows a young dinosaur named Littlefoot who, after losing his mother, embarks on a journey to find the legendary Great Valley, a lush paradise untouched by the disasters plaguing their land. Littlefoot forms friendships with other young dinosaurs along the way. Filled with heartfelt themes of friendship and perseverance, and memorable characters, “The Land Before Time” has become a timeless classic cherished by audiences of all ages.

 

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” is a family adventure that was one of my favorites as a kid. Inventor Wayne Szalinski accidentally shrinks his children and their friends to a micro size with his latest invention, a shrinking ray. The kids have to navigate the dangers of their own backyard in their quest to return to normal size. This movie has inventive (for the time) special effects, thrilling encounters with oversized insects. “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” is a charming and imaginative journey that appeals to audiences of all ages.

 

Annie (1982)

When it comes to John Hughes movies “Ferris Bueller’s Day off” just might be my favorite teen movie from the 80s. Matthew Broderick plays the title role in this 1986 comedy directed by John Hughes. This movies follows the adventures of Ferris Bueller, a high school student. He decides to skip school and have an unforgettable day in downtown Chicago with his friends. This cult classic captures the thrill of teenage rebellion and the importance of seizing the moment. It is one of the best movies of the 80s.

 

Dirty Dancing

Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Die Hard, and Lethal Weapon didn’t make the list. But they are all great movies from the 80s if you’re looking for an older audience. And if you’re looking for a romantic comedies look no further than “When Harry Met Sally.” 

 

1980s was a golden era for family film, offering timeless classics that have withstood the test of time.
