Summer is more than just a season; it’s a state of mind. As the days grow longer and the nights warmer, I find myself wanting to spend as much time outside as possible. Right now is the perfect time to get your patio set up and ready for summer. Whether you’re planning to host backyard barbecues, garden brunches, or simply enjoy an evening under the stars, the perfect piece of furniture can transform your space. I want to share the best outdoor furniture and decor to help you make the most of these warmer days.
The Best Outdoor Furniture and Decor for Summer 2024
‘m planning on making the most of the season and will be on our patio with a spritz in hand every chance I get. Our patio feels like an outdoor oasis – comfortable furniture, newly planted hydrangea, and soon, new pillows. Today, I’m going to share some of the best patio furniture – from outdoor sofas to outdoor dining sets. This post will have everything you need to make your outdoor space cozy, functional, and beautiful this summer.
But with the inclement weather here in Chicago, a metal outdoor collection seemed safest. I love our outdoor patio furniture set – the clean lines feel modern but traditional. We chose a sofa, two lounge chairs and coordinating ottomans, and a table that seats 4 since we didn’t have too much room. Whether you’re looking for outdoor furniture sets or want to piece something together, this post has everything you need for the perfect outdoor living space. Here are my favorite patio sets and the best places to shop.
Understanding Your Space and Needs
Before diving into specific furniture choices, it’s crucial to evaluate your outdoor space and how you intend to use it. Here are a few considerations:
Space Size and Layout: Measure your space to understand what size and quantity of furniture will fit comfortably. Consider traffic flow and how different pieces will interact.
Usage: Are you looking to create an outdoor dining area, a lounge space, or a versatile area that can accommodate both? Your intended use will heavily influence your furniture choices.
Climate: Weather conditions in your area should dictate your material choices. If you live in a region with frequent rain, for example, waterproof materials are essential.
Outdoor Furniture
Comfortable seating is the cornerstone of any outdoor space. Here are some popular options:
Outdoor Sofas and Sectionals: These provide ample seating and can be arranged in various configurations to fit your space. Look for weather-resistant materials like synthetic wicker or treated wood.
Chairs and Lounges: Adirondack chairs, chaise lounges, and hammocks are excellent for relaxation. Consider adding cushions or pillows for extra comfort.
Dining Chairs: If you plan to have meals outdoors, sturdy and comfortable dining chairs are a must. Look for stackable or foldable options if you need to save space.
Dining Tables: Available in various sizes and shapes, choose one that fits your space and dining needs. Materials like teak, aluminum, or resin are durable and stylish.
Side and Coffee Tables: These are perfect for placing drinks, snacks, or decor items. Opt for matching materials to create a cohesive look.
Outdoor Bar: A bar cart or a built-in bar can elevate your entertaining game.
Fire Pits and Heaters: These extend the usability of your outdoor space into cooler evenings and add a cozy ambiance.
Adding Comfort with Cushions and Fabrics
Outdoor cushions and fabrics add comfort and style but must be durable enough to withstand the elements:
Weather-Resistant Fabrics: Look for cushions made with outdoor fabrics like Sunbrella, which are designed to resist fading, mildew, and moisture.
Patterns and Colors: Don’t be afraid to play with patterns and colors. Bright, bold hues can liven up your space, while neutral tones offer a timeless look.
Outdoor Seating
These are some of my favorite outdoor pieces – I love teak wood, metal, and woven weather-resistant materials. From patio chairs to sofas, this is the best outdoor patio furniture. And don’t forget to invest in furniture covers. We bought these – they are very affordable and do the job. You’ll see the same stores throughout this post since they are the best outdoor furniture stores. But I’ve gone through everything to select what I think are the best pieces.
Outdoor Dining Furniture
Both of our patios have been small spaces. So instead of buying a larger dining table that seats at least 6, we bought a smaller 4-top. The long term goal for our home is to add a second larger pea gravel patio on the side of the house – we have the perfect place for it. This project is years out – I’d love a larger area for entertaining. A great place to gather by a fire pit or maybe even an outdoor fireplace? We’ll see.
The teak folding bistro set is the perfect choice for small spaces. I had one just like it on this tiny balcony (ok, it was actually the landing of my back stairway but I was at the top and made it work) of my Lincoln Park apartment. And our last home had the perfect spot right on our front porch – we would sit out there with a coffee in the morning. The teak definitely wears over time but I actually love how it looks now.
Choosing the Right Outdoor Furniture Material
The material of your outdoor furniture affects durability, maintenance, and aesthetics. Here are some common materials and their pros and cons:
Wood: Teak, cedar, and eucalyptus are popular choices due to their durability and natural beauty. However, they require regular maintenance to prevent weather damage.
Metal: Aluminum and wrought iron are sturdy options. Aluminum is lightweight and rust-resistant, while wrought iron is heavier and more traditional in appearance but may require rust protection.
Wicker and Rattan: These materials offer a classic, relaxed look and are available in natural or synthetic versions. Synthetic wicker is more durable and weather-resistant.
Plastic and Resin: These materials are affordable, lightweight, and easy to maintain. Modern designs can mimic more expensive materials.
Outdoor Pillows and Decor
Accessorizing your outdoor area might be the best part – I just purchased the lake stripes, dock stripes, and navy lido pillow for our patio. Pillows make your space cozier and add some color (and texture). So whether you’re having drinks with friends or enjoying a good book outside, you’ll feel at home. Serena & Lily pillows are clearly a favorite of mine – they just do blue and white so well, but there are quite a few different colors to choose from.
Incorporating Decor and Accessories
Decor elements bring personality and functionality to your outdoor space:
Outdoor Rugs: These help define different areas and add a touch of indoor comfort. Choose rugs made from durable, weather-resistant materials.
Lighting: String lights, lanterns, and solar-powered path lights create a magical atmosphere. Consider a mix of ambient and task lighting to suit different activities.
Planters and Greenery: Incorporate potted plants, hanging baskets, and garden beds to add life and color. Select plants that thrive in your climate and require minimal maintenance.
Shade Solutions: Umbrellas, pergolas, and shade sails protect against the sun and add a stylish element. Choose options that complement your furniture and decor.
Outdoor Coffee Tables
Choosing an outdoor coffee table can be surprisingly difficult. We initially purchased a sofa that did not have a coordinating table.
Outdoor Rugs
Outdoor Patio Umbrellas
A patio umbrella is an essential. So much that we have 2 – one by our seating area and one by our dining table.
Outdoor Bar Carts
Outdoor Entertaining and Decor
Once you’ve chosen the right pieces for your patio, it’s time to get ready for outdoor entertaining. Here’s are my top picks for outdoor decor and dining.
Outdoor Planters and Pots
Outdoor Activities
Creating a beautiful and functional outdoor space for summer is all about choosing the right furniture and decor to suit your needs and style. From selecting the perfect seating and tables to incorporating stylish and practical accessories, every element contributes to your outdoor oasis, and making our outdoor extension of your home.
