Our Portugal Engagement Photos

Even though I had a feeling Conor was going to propose the day before we left, I couldn’t have been more surprised by our engagement. We had looked at rings late last year so I knew it was coming, but I accidentally found the ring it in our closet a few weeks before we got engaged. And no, I wasn’t looking for it and did not look at it. Never hide a ring in a shoebox the week new shelves come in, especially if you’re dating a type A neat freak.

I was still in complete shock and my hands would. not. stop. shaking. And the week the followed was the happiest week of my life. All that excitement you feel when we first started dating came rushing back and it was magic.

As much as I hate being photographed and as cheesy as I always thought engagement photos were, I decided to book a photo shoot in Portugal with The Barilles. All our travel photos are iPhone photos and I figured that we’d love having photos of us on our trip with or without a ring. So yes, I pre-booked our engagement session before getting engaged. The takeaway is that women are just that intuitive.

It was my intention to take photos of us exploring the city but we had a bottle of rosé before the shoot and the theme went from exploring to this. Super romantic trip, guys. I didn’t even notice the camera.

How do you feel about engagement sessions and photo shoots to document life occasions?

  • Ashley La Fleur

I love that you did them on your trip. I feel like sessions that are in different places add extra meaning to the photos. I’m with you that engagement sessions can be a little cheesy especially at some of the overdone locations in Chicago.

I love these photos danielle!! so gorgeous!

  • Jessica

These are gorgeous and romantic and adorable–and I say this as someone who can definitely find engagement photos a bit cheesy and eye-rolly (not a word but let’s go with it). And I love that you have photos to memorialize the trip you took right after your engagement!

    • Haha. Totally a word and I’m with you! Not usually a fan and CANNOT believe I even wanted to do it. But I’m so happy we have these photos and now get why people want to document this time. Thanks so much for the sweet comment!

  • Allison

Totally agree with Jessica below- I normally find engagement photos a bit “eye-rolly” as well, but these are so sweet and genuine! You look gorgeous and you both look so natural together!

    • Aww thank you! So glad these didn’t make you get all eye-rolly. Ha.

  • These are gorgeous! You two radiate happiness and love. It’s beautiful!

These photos are gorgeous! You two are such a beautiful couple. As a long time reader, I’m thrilled for you!

  • I got engaged in January and the wedding is June 2018. I just booked our photographer today and an engagement shoot is part of the package. I’m a little nervous but I think it will be amazing to have some nice professional photos of us after 6.5 years together! Your photos are beautiful and perfectly romantic!

    • Emma Wiedner

Stacy, I have a really similar story to yours. Our shoot started off a little cliche and finally I just said to the photographer we want fun and silly too, and she ran with it. Now we have both great romantic shots and fun and relaxed ones of us. I say embrace it and just communicate with your photographer. Agreed it is really nice to have professional photos after being together so long. Congratulations!

I too was similarly scepitcal but so happy we ended up doing them! Yours are beautiful! Congrats and happy planning!
