question of the day // pets

In case you’re new to the blog, let me introduce you to my pup. His name is Buddy.
Yes. Like the Christmas elf.

I may or may not have been thinking about getting a friend for the pup for the past few months. I love to pine over big decisions, so you shouldn’t expect a new pup announcement any time soon. We would have to find the perfect lil’ rescue and I’d like the two dogs to be close in age. She should be a girl because I wouldn’t want him to feel like he was in competition with another male. She should also be a french bulldog, because I really want one of those. I even have her name picked out.

Pet owners — I want to know…

How many pets do you have?
What are their names?
If you have more than one dog, was there a big difference going from one to two?

Oh Buddy is so cute. I also have a chihuahua named Lola and at some point we want to get another one (actually husband says he wants a whole pack at some point, like 6-7). We probably would get another chihuahua but not any time soon.

I have a kitten named Cali. I like to have one animal at a time for a while and then introducing a new pet. I think I am going to keep to one dog and one cat until I move into a bigger home. Once I am married, me and my husband will be getting a dog sometime this time next year.

I think 2 small dogs are okay though.

we have two, chihuahuas. we had george for about 6 months before we got JC. george was a challenge (potty training) but once we finally got him sorted out, he trained JC. it was easy going from 1-2 because JC really just did everything george did.

it was a hard adjustment… for the chis, not sure if it would be the case with other dogs. At first I had to crate them separately and they could barely tolerate one another. one night I decided to put them together and they've been inseparable since. they act like they don't like each other, but when it is time to sleep they wrap around each other like a yin & yang.

We have two dogs- a lab mix (Charlie Brown) and a standard cockapoo (Bumper). When we added Bumper to the mix, Charlie was so much happier- he loves having a companion to play with while we aren't home or just plain busy. Hvaing two mid-sized dogs did make things feel a whole lot more crowded around the house, though!

  • Greer’s Gossip

We have a maltese named Layla. She is two and is spoiled rotten. Sometimes I think I would like a friend for her, but other days she is definitely enough.

My family had two dogs – a lab/golden retriever mix named Oliver, and a lab/collie mix named Sophie. We rescued Sophie before she could be taken to a shelter and brought her home (as a puppy) when Oliver was about 6 years old. Oliver was not pleased, but grew to love Sophie.

Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Oliver last summer soon after he turned 14. Sophie went through severe depression for about two or three months, and we now take her to doggie daycare to hang with the other dogs her size (and age.)

I think it's a great idea to get a pup that's Buddy's age. Good luck!

We have a five and a half month old puppy name Wrigley (having moved from Chicago, and be obsessed with the Cubs it was only fitting).

We've talked about getting another one — yes we are a bit nuts — but have been told to wait until he's closer to 2 and out of the puppy stage before introducing another animal.

Good luck with your decision! New follower!

    Buddy is adorable!

Right now we don't have any pets (because we live in an apt that won't let us have them, boo) but when we had a house we had two dogs and an ornery old cat. One dog was mine from when I was a teenager. She was a Lhasa Apso and her name was Wally (don't ask). She was a beautiful dog and the sweetest dog we've ever had. She passed away back in 2005 and it still hurts to think about it. Our other dog was a young mini-Schnauzer named Charter, and he was awesome! Full of energy, sweet tempered, and the best lap dog. As for the cat? I didn't like her so I won't discuss her.

When we moved, Charter went to live with my parents (who already had two dogs to begin with). Abby, their younger dog at the time was two, and she and Charter LOVED each other. Charter got hit by a car last year and I think Abby went through some sort of depression. She seems to be doing better now.

Good luck! I'm sure whoever you choose as a buddy for Buddy will be perfect.

I have a cat that I adopted from PAWS. He's currently bleeding me dry with vet bills, but I love him wholeheartedly nonetheless. (Fatty Liver Disease which resulted in a feeding tube with three feedings a day and seven different types of medicine.)

Buster is his name — it was the name PAWS had given him, but Buster is my favorite character from Arrested Development and I thought it was kismet.

Buddy is too cute! And thanks for stopping by my blog =)

My sis-in-law has a french bulldog named Canuba and she is a feisty little thing! She's goign to obedience school soon though and we're hoping it makes a big difference! She head butts, haha!

We just have a cat but we're hoping to get a dog hopefully this year. I want a Siberian Husky…our cat is a maine coon and he is gray and white, so they would match!

  • kay*(from india.with love)

we're totally thinking the same thing! when i'm back from india i'm thinking of getting another dog so howard has a pal…and i like french bulldogs too! but this decision is at least 15 months away!

& as much of a planner as i am i actually do not have a name picked out yet.

    Just my one little guy.
His name is Smalls, from the movie The Sandlot – "you're killin me smalls".
As much as I would love another.. Smalls has had some serious life/death experiences for not even being 3 yet.. So our bond is just too strong that I don't think it would even be fair to another little one.

And Smalls is expensive enough lol.

Buddy is such a cutie! Adorable! We have a ten month old puppy, Oliver, and for Christmas/late January we got a baby puppy who is two months old now, Chloe. It has been a lot of work! Having two dogs is a lot more work than one! They fight/play all the time and it is quite the hand-full! I know that if you are adopting a dog the likelihood that you are getting a puppy is probably small, but that will save you some stress. Just know that it is a lot more work!!

We had 2 westies, Bear and Tobey. We got Bear first and he was very much a cuddly, happy-to-stay-at-home-in-your-lap kind of dog. We got Tobey about 1 1/2 years later (when Tobey was a puppy) and he was very active and playful and LOUD. He also loved people, but wanted to play-play-play! Even after he outgrew puppyhood, he still wanted to play all the time. I think that Bear tolerated him, but he definitely did not love Tobey šŸ™‚ We eventually had to give Tobey away because any dog that he hadn't met when he was a puppy was a threat to him, and he would get really growly around them. The final straw was when he attacked my sister's little dog and bit him pretty hard. We gave him away to a guy who lived out in the country with no other dogs. It ended up being a great thing, because his new owner had been paralyzed in a motorcycle accident and had wanted a Westie for years, but didn't have the physical capability to train one. We had done all of the training and he was really well-behaved… so long as he wasn't around other dogs! We won't get another dog in NZ, but I think that when we do we'll get one that's a little older so we can see more of their personality šŸ™‚

I love your pup, he's adorable! I want one of my own SO badly.

p.s. I'm a new follower – as in just clicked the follow button! I just went through & perused through your photos… they are amazing! I love a good photo!

  • Sofi Stellar

Omg, so cute! I'm so glad you introduced him, because I'm a new reader!

I have a pet, he is a black long haired chihuahua and his name is Grendel!

  • Melisande

i've said it before and i'll say it again, buddy is too cute! a french bulldog sounds adorable, i'm curious what name you have in mind! i just have one dog, mostly because she's such a handful on her own!

  • The Redhead Newlywed

We have a chihuahua/jack russell mix named Frankie (a rescue) who is very territorial. Last year we adopted another rescue, an english springer spaniel named Collin. They are inseparable! We made sure to introduce them by having Collin wait in the backyard and having Frankie come outside to meet him. They were best buds from the get go! It was important to not bring Collin straight into the house ..which is Frankie's territory. Also, they are both boys, so it's very important that Frankie always know's he is the dominant dog in the house. We have a cat too, they all get along great. Good luck!! Buddy is so cute!

  • {Louisiana.Bride}

I have two daschunds, Ellie & Maddie. Ellie was a very easy puppy, and then we got Maddie. Love her to death, but she has a difficult to train personality. Worse than the regular daschund. Two aren't that bad though. Totally depends on the individual dogs personality.

  • Emily

Buddy is adorable. We're bringing our two cats, Lily and Lyra, to Chicago in a month. I hope they like their view from the 10th floor.

  • taylor

aww, buddy looks so sweet! although i can't have any pets at my current apartment, i did grow up with two newfoundlands. we started out with one (a female) and then got a second one (a male) about two years later. there was definitely an adjustment period, but they eventually got along. i think the older dog was jealous for quite a while though! good luck with your decision. i'm sure buddy would love a playmate.

  • Sharstin

buddy is a handsome lil devil! love the pict with the paws crossed:) we don't have any pets–but i love dogs! but i bet buddy would love a little lady french bulldog friend:)

  • Celeste

Yes! I have 2 pets (both girls) – a tortoise-shell tabby cat named Josie & my pup is a chocolate lab named Nora. (both rescue pets! yay!)

Honestly – up until just a few years ago, I wasn't even considering ever having a pet… let alone 2! But, Josie & Nora practically fell into my lap in a way… and I know that that was God introducing me to the wonderful world of Pet-Parenting! I could not imagine being without my 2 little girls. šŸ˜‰

  • Sunshine Girl

Two dogs! I love that they have each other. They can often be found cuddling/playing. We bought Chester, a Min-Pin, and then rescued Bailey, a Manchester Terrier.

Really, there is no difference, once you have one dog, to get another. A little more cost, or vets and stuff, obviously, but I wouldn't say any more work.

I started a new blog by the way.

  • Kylea

You go girl!!!! You and he will love it!!! šŸ™‚

  • meghan

i would lovelovelove to have a french bulldog. except i would get a male and his name would be george. they are so stinking cute!

  • Loren

Ohhhh, french bulldogs are the cutest! I've always wanted one…I have 1 cat named Sadie. I can only handle one animal at a time, I don't want to deal w/ double the mess pets can sometimes make šŸ˜‰

  • Ash

We have 3 (!!!) dachshunds, Paisley, Peonie & Piper. It was more difficult going from two to three than it was one to two. It took a few weeks, a night or two sleeping on the couch with me & C (my boyfriend) and all 3 girls to get them used to each other~ and now, they get along great! Good luck! šŸ™‚

  • The Cat

I have a Buddy (named after the elf) too! He was a stray that found me on Christmas Eve 2009. At my house it's just Buddy and I, but a few days a week I take him to my parents' house so he can play with their pug (Harley) and lab (Osa.) The biggest difference that I notice when he's around other dogs is that he barks. At home he never does, over there he won't shut up.
